RE:  WOULD YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER LIKE TO BE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR?

 Dear MAMAS San Diego Members:

My daughter, Samantha Slotkin Goodman, and I are in the process of collecting and editing our third book of essays in our series of books about women lawyers and work-life balance. Our first book, IT’S HARDER IN HEELS:  Essays by Women Lawyers Achieving Work-Life Balance was published in 2007 and SHARING THE PANTS:  Essays on Work-Life Balance by Men Married to Lawyers was published in late 2009.

This book, MOTHER IN LAW, will be a collection of essays by children (from ages seven to adult) of women lawyers.  If you would like to volunteer your child, or your adult-child would like to volunteer to write an essay, please contact either of us.  Legal publisher, Anton Vandeplas, of Vandeplas Publishing has accepted the book for publication.

If your young child wants to participate but would find it difficult (or may be too young) to write an essay, we will send you a suggested list of questions to ask your child.  You may email us their answers and we will draft the essay using the material you’ve sent us (and we will return the essay for your approval), or you may write the essay on behalf of your child.

Your child’s story should be 500 - 2000 words (one to four double-spaced pages).  Drawings and poems are appropriate.  We will need your child’s biography included with the essay.  By virtue of having sent us your child’s contribution, you, on behalf of your child, will automatically be granting us a non-exclusive license to reproduce the essay.  Minors will maintain copyrights in what they have written.  (Minors may claim copyright, and the U.S. Copyright Office issues registrations to minors.) The submission deadline is March 1, 2012.

We will, of course, be willing to help you and your child in any way – by talking through ideas, helping with writing and editing, even extending the deadline.  Please call or email either of us with any questions and comments.

Any proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to The San Diego Country Bar Association and to The Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Sincerely,

Prof. Jackie Slotkin                                                    Samantha Slotkin Goodman, Esq.
